Around Thanksgiving in 2012, Noah Pozner was happy with the toys he had received for his sixth birthday and had started planning playdates with his friends. “He’d just lost his first tooth and was also very excited about that,” said his father, Leonard Pozner.

A few weeks later, on December 14, Noah became the youngest victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, the worst school shooting in American history.

Twenty children, all six or seven years old, and six staff were gunned down by a young man called Adam Lanza that Friday morning in Newtown, Connecticut. Noah’s twin sister and another sister survived.

Straight away, a conspiracy theory sprang up: the tragedy had never happened. According to this narrative, the event was an elaborate hoax staged by the Obama administration in order to introduce stricter gun laws, the grieving parents were actually “crisis actors,” and children such as Noah did not even exist.

“The ‘hoaxers’ take pleasure in tormenting people. They’ve convinced themselves that they’re the good guys saving the world from the dark forces,” said Pozner, who has had to move home several times due to harassment — both online and in person — and death threats from those who subscribe to the so-called Sandy Hoax theory.
