In a recent New York Times article, it was revealed that a former Facebook content moderator was suing the social media giant for PTSD due to the volume and extreme nature of the thousands of posts she was compelled to watch as a part of her job. In addition to the hateful posts, content moderators are compelled to watch child sexual abuse, beheadings, murders, suicide, beastiality and all manner of violent videos, photos, and graphics. Of course, repeated, exposure to this type of content can cause significant emotional and psychological damage.
In the article it is revealed that at Facebook, there are roughly 7,500 people, worldwide, who review over TEN MILLION reported posts EACH WEEK! Each content moderator is therefore compelled to review and address tens of thousands of instances of reported content each month.
Facebook has responded that they (similar to other platforms) will be hiring more content moderators in the future. But this also provides us as users a glimpse at the scope of the problem. Millions of people are being harassed, exposed, and abused in mass online and their only line of defense seems to be a significantly over-worked, emotionally fragile, similarly abused group of moderators. If moderators are suffering to this degree over posts targeting strangers, it should be easy to understand the effects on victims themselves.
With first quarter net profits of $4.9 billion dollars, it seems that Facebook could invest significantly more into hiring an appropriate number of moderators, establishing clear rules for removal (one of the sited issues), and providing better mental health for employees. This in turn would allow them to better protect users.
