Sandy Hook: Family of shooting victim reveals trauma of living with tragedy
Posted , updated
It has been almost four years since Veronique Pozner’s son was killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting.
In 2012 six-year-old Noah Pozner was killed, alongside almost 20 other children and six adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown Connecticut school when a gunman opened fire in the school.
Lisa Millar and cameraman Dan Sweetapple were working in the Washington bureau when the Sandy Hook shooting occurred, and they interviewed Ms Pozner at the time.
Now, in the wake of the Orlando shooting, Millar has gone back to Ms. Pozner about the legacy of the shooting.
An encounter three-and-a-half years in the making
I knock on the door and there is just silence inside.
Have I made a mistake with the time? Did Veronique realize I was going to fly to meet her the very next day?
This is an encounter that has been three-and-a-half years in the making and I think I’ve screwed up.
Cameraman Dan Sweetapple is rolling on what was meant to be a reunion — Veronique and I greet each other again years after our first interview.
“She said she was going to leave work early to meet us. Maybe we’re too early,” I say to the camera, but really it’s to Dan who is sensing my anxiety.
I try the doorbell and finally I hear footsteps. She opens the door and we share smiles. Hers says “it’s going to be OK”.
